Habits for healthy skin make small changes for big results
Aging skin is a fact of life. But no matter how old you are, there are things you can do now to prevent skin damage later. It's all about making skin care part of your healthy lifestyle. Review this list to see where you can make some changes in your life—and then watch for the positive changes in your skin.
Protect your skin from the sun
Most of the changes associated with aging skin are caused by sun exposure, so protecting your skin from the sun is one of the most important things you can do for your appearance.
- Wear sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher even if you have darker skin
- Minimize time outdoors when the sun is most intense
Don't smoke
Smoking accelerates the aging of your skin and increases wrinkles. It damages the elastin and collagen that give your skin strength and elasticity.
Minimize alcohol
Alcohol expands the small blood vessels in the skin and increases blood flow near the surface, which can create a flushed appearance.
Eat well
A balanced diet gives your skin the nutrients it needs to repair damage and stay healthy.
Reduce stress
If you worry and frown a lot, the muscles in your face can actually conform to that movement, causing frown lines and wrinkles.
Get enough sleep
Lack of sleep, no surprise, can make you look tired—in the form of sagging skin and dark circles or bags under the eyes.
Wash your skin gently
- Long showers, frequent face washing and hot water can remove necessary oils from your skin
- Remove make-up carefully to avoid damaging the delicate tissue around your eyes
- Apply moisturizer immediately after washing your face to maintain the moisture
Moisturize regularly
Moisturizers help maintain your skin's natural moisture level either by sealing moisture inside or slowly releasing water into your skin.
Conduct self-screenings
Familiarize yourself with your skin and look out for any changes. Ask your physician about any new moles or patches, which, though often harmless, could be serious.
Seek professional help
for any skin problems
Keep in mind that your skin might not be perfect. It might be dry or oily, or it may have uneven tone or not have enough glow, but whatever the case seek the advice of a dermatologist that will help you find your true glow. |

Take control of the aging process
As time passes it’s still you in the mirror, but because your skin changes as you age, you may look a little different. The good news is the earlier you start taking care of your skin, the more you can prevent the signs of aging and maintain the younger looks. Here's the basic timeline:
20s
Natural facial expressions like smiling, laughing and pondering all involve muscle contractions, and in your 20s you might start to see some fine lines and creases related to facial movement—first around the brow and then in the form of "crow's feet" around the eyes. You may also see lines around the eyes if you spent a lot of time in the sun as a child, or if you squint at a computer screen for long hours.
30s
As you age; your skin's collagen and elastin—which are proteins that keep your skin tight—break down faster than your body can rebuild them. As a result, your skin in your 30s may start to look tired and less radiant. As your skin loses elasticity, you may develop more noticeable wrinkles and lines. In addition, you may start to notice brown spots or uneven pigmentation caused by sun exposure.
40s
Your skin may start to appear less smooth or glowing. Lines may form around your eyes, mouth and forehead; your lips may get smaller; some skin may start to sag; and the corners of your mouth may turn down—so you look like you're frowning when you're not.
50s+
At this age, the breakdown of collagen and elastin that started in your 30s is now in full force, causing your skin to sag. Your skin may also start to look thinner and more translucent, which can make blood vessels more visible—causing your skin to look discolored. Your skin may get dryer, lines may appear on your cheeks, lines from your nose to your mouth may become deeper, and expression lines may also become more pronounced. You may see more age spots/sunspots, especially if you are fair-skinned.
Basic skin care at any age
At any age you should use products with sunscreens and antioxidants, and make healthy lifestyle changes that protect your skin (see Habits for Healthy Skin). What you do in your 20s will affect how you look in your 40s, 50s and beyond. As you are getting older it is recommended to add a moisturizer to your daily routine increasing the richness of it as your skin demands more nutrients.
The good news is that adding Clear + Brilliant to your bag of tricks at any age will not only prevent signs of aging but also will help you recover the glow, luminosity and smoothness your skin, and you, deserve. |
